Plane Sailing is another in the "All Is Number" family of sculptures, in that it was made from more of the same pieces that had originally been cut for "All Is Number". Plane sailing it was as each plane of crossed pieces was carefully set in place. The two resulting wings seem to move as the shadows cast change during the day. The original meaning of the term "Plane Sailing" refers to the simplifying assumption that the surface of a body of water being navigated exists in just two dimensions. The error that results is small enough to be ignored until getting the next set of bearings for the boat's location and destination.
