Second to be completed in the
series of six sculptures that developed in the Triumph series, Pirouette is the
simplest shape, and also forms the basis for the fourth piece, Astrolabe. The
shape was developed while working up the courage to begin Triumph again, after
problems with Triumph's bevel angles meant that all the pieces had to be
cut anew. None of the first batch of pieces would be wasted, but I was not
up to the challenge of starting again right away. First, I assembled
Cavalcade from the six partial cones that weren't going to work for Triumph,
then I began toying with different shapes to make with the numerous spare
pieces. Pirouette was the result. It can stand on either end of the sculpture and has
very different aspects depending on viewing angle. Best displayed at table height.
